IMHO Dave's correct about Apple's implementation on the nMPs, except perhaps about the max-channel-count figure and the monitoring thing. Your 2009 unit should be good to go with that card, but I'd check this by asking the question here first to be certain as I've only confirmed this for my 2012 model: So, Steve, you don't have to save up for a nMP and all the attendant peripheral nonsense. Once I "confirmed", through the GS thread, that I could go ethernet on my 'puter, I opted to add the 3rd 24Ai and retain all my gear. Originally went for two of the former and the single latter unit, intending to use USB2 whilst having to sell some outboard MIDI units in order to squeeze my synths into the reduced (64 I/O) channel count over USB. Almost finished paying off the lay-buy (after a year!) for 3 x 24Ai and a 16A.

At least, it had better be or I'm up the creek without a paddle. one can connect an individual interface or indeed the MOTU switch box (for multiple interfaces) to an older Mac Pro.įurthermore, the max channel count is not 64 as Dave suggested it's 128 in both directions simultaneously. Here's what I believe is actually the case:īy installing an AVB-capable ethernet card such as this one: This feels very strange as I've never corrected Dave on anything he's such a dynamo, after all! The long network cable could be a more useful solution for a playback system. In a recording setup this is somewhat limited unless you don't need to hear what you're recording. So really the one advantage of direct AVB to the computer is that you can run a very long cable between the computer and interface. Maximum channel I/O is currently 64 in each direction and goes down with higher sample rates. For example the Apple implementation limits direct AVB to 48, 96, and 192 kHz sample rates.

On pre-Thunderbolt Macs, the network port will work for control of the AVB system, but it will not pass audio.ĭirect AVB enabling on the computer is relatively new and obviously still developing. If your Mac has a Thunderbolt port, it's network port is AVB enabled. Magicd wrote:Apple added direct AVB support when they started putting Thunderbolt ports on their computers.
